LYCHGATE release "Precipice"

Five years after the acclaimed "Also sprach Futura" EP and seven years after last full-length, "The Contagion In Nine Steps", the UK's LYCHGATE return with an immersive new work of singular intent. "Precipice" expands the band's dystopian avant-prog-Death experimentalism with a near-mechanical poise and a sustained atmosphere of unease.

Main composer Vortigern discussed his wide-ranging influences in an interview with Rock Hard Italy:

"Recently someone also described Lychgate as doom/death with RIO (Rock in Opposition) and classical influences. RIO is an interesting reference because it's not the same as saying progressive rock. RIO bands/projects like ART ZOYD, UNIVERS ZERO and SHUB-NIGGURATH have definitely been inspiring to us. In addition, I always considered the last two Emperor albums as relevant to LYCHGATE. In the end, the influences are wide-ranging, so the result just happens, rather than being intentional or conforming to a metal sub-genre.

As for unpredictability and cohesion: I've thought about this a lot over the years. If I may say so, I believe our latest work is more cohesive than previous work. There are elements of unpredictability, but that's one of the features of the style itself. Darkness or tension needs an element of ambiguity, as does a good novel. However, for cohesiveness, I believe the threads are linked by underlying musical patterns and harmony. These are not always obvious to the listener, but they do exist."
